National Awards of Landscape Excellence
Landscape Manitoba & CNLA Celebrate the Green Industry at the Manitoba Green Show Landscape Manitoba’s trade show and conference for the green industry, the Manitoba Green Show, recognized industry contributors during the Awards of Excellence Gala, held in conjunction with the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association’s (CNLA) National Awards of Landscape Excellence on Tuesday February 10th. Landscape Manitoba handed out five awards for Landscape Construction Projects over $15,000.00; 3 Seasons Landscaping Inc. (Winnipeg), Alternative Landscaping (Brandon), Swiss Alpine Landscaping Ltd. (St. Andrews), Oakridge Landscape Services (Steinbach), and Galay Landscape and Irrigation (Selkirk). In addition, Landscape Manitoba handed out three specialty awards to five deserving industry members at the event. The Walter Shelmerdine Award was presented to Brian Duncan, previous owner of St. Mary’s Garden Centre (Winnipeg) and to Bo Wohlers with Shelmerdine Ltd. (Headlingley). This award is presented in recognition of valuable contributions made by an individual to Landscape Manitoba. The award was named in honor of Walter Shelmerdine, the first President of the Association, as a leader of a group of individuals who recognized the need for a strong association to voice the concerns of all members in the industry. The Project EverGreen Because Green Matters Award was presented to Brenda Cameron and Ken Ivey, past representatives with Manitoba Communities in Bloom. The Because Green Matters Award is presented to an individual or organization whose actions or influence have directly resulted in a betterment and sustainability of our environment and also made a significant contribution to the green industry in Manitoba. One Honourary Life Membership was also awarded to Ernie Kackenhoff of Kackenhoff Nurseries Ltd. (St. Norbert). This award recognizes long-term members who have contributed to the strength of the association. Landscape Manitoba congratulates all of our award winners and thanks them for their passion and contribution to the green industry in Manitoba. The Canadian Nursery Landscape Association presented the sixth annual National Awards of Landscape Excellence. There are two categories highlighted: landscape maintenance; and landscape construction and installation. The John Deere Award of Excellence for Landscape Maintenance was presented to Evergreen Landscaping & Lawn Maintenance (Hamilton, ON) for the Mlekuz Residence. The Caterpillar Award of Excellence for Landscape Construction and Installation was presented to Pacifica Landscape Works (Surrey, BC) for West Van Waterfront. Landscape Manitoba and the CNLA’s Awards of Excellence programs highlight the importance of sustainable landscapes to the well-being and beauty of Canada’s increasingly urban environment. The programs recognize the key role played by landscape design, installation and maintenance companies, parks boards and other horticulturists in executing the best management practices that protect our environment including: water cleanliness and conservation; pest management; air quality; waste reduction; and plant selection. Landscape Manitoba celebrated their 50th anniversary at this event. We welcomed the CNLA Board of Director’s at our trade show, conference and awards. Our trade show featured 63 booths and was attended by hundreds of members of the green industry. The National Awards of Landscape Excellence is a way for Canada to recognize those companies that have actively participated in significantly raising the level of professionalism in the landscape industry. The National Awards of Landscape Excellence is an initiative of Landscape Canada, commodity group of CNLA. Landscape Canada paved the way to get the Awards off the ground. It is because of the strong support of the sponsors, John Deere and Caterpillar, that the Awards continue to grow. This year, seven provincial associations will enter their provincial awards winners to compete in the National Awards of Landscape Excellence. These provinces include: BC, AB, MB, ON, QC, NB and NS.
